Autumn in New York is a by-the-numbers love story, right down to its opening shot of, yes, autumn in New York. Richard Gere stars as restaurateur/lady's man Will, while Winona Ryder plays the airy-fairy, oh-too-delicate-for-this-world Charlotte. Will is 48, Charlotte is 22, and it just keeps getting creepier: Will actually used to hang out with Charlotte's mom. She plays artily with beads and sparkly things, he notices how elfin and different she is (inspiring such stomach-churning dialogue as "I find you completely unprecedented and therefore utterly unpredictable"), and soon they're in love. Ah, but it's doomed: she has a tumor in her heart (just in case you missed the significance, Charlotte says "I'm sick in my heart!"). Does Charlotte have enough time left to teach Will to truly love? While Gere does a stoic job, Ryder spends a lot of time being darling and winsome, aided by the fact that Charlotte has managed to catch one of those special movie diseases where you never look bad or get tubes stuck up your nose. Director Joan Chen doesn't have much of a script to work with, but at least she knows how to pick a cinematographer; the whole movie is shot in gorgeous fall-leaf colors. Several excellent supporting actors are trapped in this movie: Jill Hennessey and Anthony LaPaglia do their very best, but what can they do in the face of such a sweeping, creepy love? Autumn in New York is nothing if not an earnest movie, and it certainly means well. Much like Charlotte, it seems to cry, "Can you let me love you? Please?" No. --Ali Davis

4 out of 5 stars MOVIE FOR THE HEART   July 16, 2010
CARMEL CLARKE (Miami, FL)
I saw this on TV and just had to purchase. Since I purchased have already watch 3 or more times. It's a movie for the true in heart. It shows that true love is possible for those who are patience and willing to wait on it being young or old. It also says that age should be considered but not the defining factor.

3 out of 5 stars Three stars for Winona, the rest was fine too   May 2, 2010

I thought this movie was okay. I liked the story and I thought it was very well-acted and I thought that Richard Gere did a fine job. I think Winona Ryder was beautiful and eccentric and sweet and cute as Charlotte, a young woman dating a man twice her age. Richard Gere plays this womanizer who owns this fancy resturant in New York City and he meets a beautiful young woman who forever changes his life. At first the two attend a gala and fall in love and later on he finds out she's terminaley ill and will die within a year. He tries to save her, but she is too sick to go on much longer. The two fight between their feelings and their emotions and also the age gap-she's 22, he's an old feller about 48 and they both have their own lives to deal with. In the end, they both decide to be together and their relainonship blossoms over the year as it goes by. Charlotte is an OK character, I think the writers made her very flimsy and maybe too perfect. I think Winona was good, but maybe some else could have played her and maybe the writers could have made her more realistic and less flaky. I liked Richard and I thought he was a fine actor. In fact, most of the movie is about him and his love for her-instead of the other way around. The ending is very heartbreaking, and don't be suprised if you tear up at the end and cry because the ending is a real tearjeker. Even I thought it was sad, and could feel my heart swell for this character who lost someone he really truly loved. Charlotte is a beautiful soul, and she walks into this man's selifish and wealthy existence and she forever changes him. I think the love and chemsitry between these two was good and I think the movie was beautifully shot and I think the film is good. I liked Winona Ryder and I love all her roles-even if this wasn't one of her best. I think Richard was really good-better then usual. He totally acted the part and was amazing. The rest of the cast fell into place. I liked this movie-it's funny and romantic and sad and heartbreaking and interesting and this film is a good movie. That's all I have to say, besides I admire Winona and I think she's amazing and beautiful and a good actress and she's so cool and I adore her.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent romantic tragedy   December 1, 2009
Courtenay J. Walker (Stuart, FL USA)
A very fine movie, always leading to its foregone conclusion.

Winona Ryder was outstanding in her role, very mesmerizing!!

Including a veteran actress such as Elaine Stritch was also a plus.
